The Fusion Food Movement and Why It’s Here to Stay

At The Crown, Cerney Wick, food has always been at the heart of what we do. Nestled between the village and the canal, our stone pub has been a gathering place for locals and visitors alike for generations. From early brewery days in the 1920s to our exciting refurbishment and relaunch in 2021, we’ve always celebrated good food, great company, and the joy of dining together.

But as the seasons change, so too does the way we eat, and in 2023, we embraced something new: Anglo-Indian fusion dining. And let us tell you, it’s a movement that’s not going anywhere.

A Meeting of Cultures on a Plate

Fusion food isn’t just about mixing flavours, it’s about storytelling. It’s where heritage recipes meet modern dining, where comfort food gets a little twist, and where familiar favourites are reimagined with a burst of spice or a nod to another tradition.

At The Crown, we wanted to honour our British pub roots while adding a fresh layer of flavour, one that reflects the long, delicious history between British and Indian cuisine.

Take our Fish + Chips - a true pub classic. Golden ale-battered cod, skinny fries, lemon and peas, but here, it comes with a rich chef’s curry sauce, the kind of addition that instantly elevates a familiar plate into something unforgettable.

Or our much-loved Crown’s Tikka Masala Puff Pastry Pie. Buttery pastry, a comforting pie at its heart, and inside, you’ll find tikka masala, Bombay potatoes, and slow-cooked dal makhani. It’s everything you want from a British pie, with the warmth and depth of Indian spice.

And then there’s the Railway Curry, our “chef’s ruby murray” that nods to the dishes once enjoyed on Indian train journeys. Choose from chicken, lamb, or vegetable, and enjoy it with kachumber salad, fluffy naan, rice, and daal. It’s a dish full of history, reimagined for today’s table.

Why Fusion is Here to Stay

Food thrives when cultures come together. Fusion dining is about more than just flavour, it’s about inclusivity, creativity, and evolution. And the beauty of fusion? It feels timeless. Just as curry houses became part of the British dining scene decades ago, Anglo-Indian flavours are now woven into what we eat and enjoy today. At The Crown, it feels less like a trend and more like a natural way forward. A celebration of tradition and innovation in equal measure.

Join Us at The Crown

The Crown at Cerney Wick: where pub classics meet Indian spice, and where the fusion food movement is very much here to stay.
